The garage is an infamously tough space to keep comfortable. The absence of ventilation can turn it into a sauna in the summertime, and poor or no insulation makes the space tough to air condition and heat.
This was the exact conundrum skateboarding legend Tony Hawk faced when he set out to transform longtime friend and videographer Tim Olson’s seen-better-days detached garage into a mid-century modern editing studio. Hawk teamed up with Drew and Jonathan Scott — the Property Brothers — on HGTV’s “Celebrity IOU” to convert the dark storage room into an inviting lounge and workspace where Tim could edit skate videos, repair skateboards, and just hang.
Tim’s garage was treated to a true overhaul: The team replaced rotten roof edges, laid new concrete foundation, and swapped the track garage door for a set of carriage-style doors with windows to allow the natural light to brighten the space. As for heating and cooling, the Property Brothers chose Quilt so Tim could keep his space comfortable year round.
“The one thing we noticed when we came into the original space — it was a hot box,” Drew said in the episode. The team used the Quilt heat pump system for air conditioning because it’s a great option for single spaces, like garages. Since the system can be controlled remotely on the Quilt app, Quilt was a great option for Tim, who can precondition his space to cool ahead of time — from the skatepark or from his car — when he knows he’ll be editing videos later that day.
“These systems also incorporate an intuitive technology that knows when you leave the room, [...] so super-super efficient,” Jonathan said to Tony as the pair set up the base for the Quilt’s outdoor unit, which is the compressor that powers the indoor mini-split. It’s true, Quilt’s advanced intelligence includes occupancy detection, schedules, and temperature preconditioning to help save energy and lower your monthly electric bill.
At last, when his brand new space was revealed to him, Tim was introduced to the indoor unit with the white oak panel that seamlessly blends into the mid-century modern vibe of the room. These panels can be painted or wallpapered, too, so they’re able to adapt to any kind of interior style. And as evidenced by Tim’s new gallery wall behind his desk, each indoor unit is equipped with a light bar that serves as an accent light for anything you want to display in your home, adding a warm and inviting feel to the space.
Tim’s hot box garage-turned-MCM-dream-office is the perfect example of how Quilt can upgrade virtually any space into a comfortable, creative haven. Quilt’s not just for single rooms, however; it’s a modular system that can serve as the primary heating and cooling technology for your whole home.
